There is no single best loan origination system (LOS) for every lender. The right one depends on what you originate. Independent buyer guides most often point mortgage lenders to ICE Encompass, banks running many loan types to nCino, credit unions to MeridianLink or Origence arc OS, commercial and SBA lenders to Abrigo or Baker Hill, and lenders that want origination and servicing in one system to HES LoanBox or TurnKey Lender.
But for many lenders the better question in 2026 is whether they need a new LOS at all. If yours records the loan well, an AI agent layer such as TaskSuite can take on the document, bureau and credit memo work around it, with no migration.
This guide summarizes how public buyer guides position each platform as of fall 2026, sorted by lender type, then shows where AI agents fit. It's written for community and regional banks, credit unions, mortgage lenders, and fintech and specialty lenders.
What is a loan origination system?
An LOS is the software a lender uses to take a loan from application through underwriting, approval, documents and closing or funding. The borrower applies through a point-of-sale front end; after funding, a loan management system (LMS) runs payments and payoff; and at banks and credit unions the core holds the booked loan. The LOS connects to the core; it doesn't replace it.
Which loan origination systems lead in 2026?
| Platform | Known for | Typical buyer |
|---|---|---|
| ICE Encompass | The default U.S. mortgage LOS, with deep compliance tooling | Mid-to-large mortgage lenders |
| nCino | Commercial, consumer, mortgage and SBA on Salesforce | Banks and credit unions wanting one system |
| MeridianLink | Consumer and mortgage from one vendor | Credit unions and community banks |
| Finastra Mortgagebot | Lower-cost mortgage and home equity origination | Community banks and credit unions |
| Abrigo | Commercial and SBA lending tied to credit risk and CECL | Community banks with a commercial book |
| Baker Hill UN/FY | Commercial, consumer and SBA without Salesforce | Community banks and credit unions growing commercial |
| Origence arc OS | Built for credit unions, strongest in indirect auto | Credit unions with dealer networks |
| HES LoanBox | Origination, servicing and collections with no-code workflow | Alternative lenders and mid-sized banks |
| TurnKey Lender | End-to-end origination, decisioning and servicing | New and fast-scaling consumer, SME and BNPL lenders |
| Aloan | AI-native commercial credit | Commercial lending teams at banks and credit unions |
Positioning is summarized from The LOS Directory's 2026 software guide and credit union guide (both last verified September 30, 2026) and HES FinTech's LOS guide (updated October 20, 2026). HES FinTech sells HES LoanBox, so read its guide with that in mind. Confirm current features with each vendor. TaskSuite, which publishes this guide, isn't in those lists; we describe it separately below.
What is the best LOS for mortgage lenders?
The LOS Directory calls ICE Encompass the mortgage system of record at roughly half the U.S. market, with 300+ integrated service providers. The tradeoffs it lists are the highest total cost in the category and 6 to 12 month implementations. MeridianLink pairs mortgage with MeridianLink Consumer for a single-vendor stack, though it's less deep than Encompass for high-volume shops. Finastra Mortgagebot is the lower-cost option for community institutions, with implementations often cited at $20,000 to $60,000. Its 1,400+ institutions figure dates from 2019.
What is the best LOS for banks with several loan types?
nCino is the closest thing to a do-everything LOS: commercial, consumer, mortgage and SBA lending on one Salesforce platform used by 1,800+ institutions, per The LOS Directory. Budget for Salesforce licensing on top of nCino's fees, and for 6 to 12 month full deployments. Banks that want several loan types without Salesforce often look at Baker Hill UN/FY, which covers commercial, consumer and SBA but has no mortgage module and typically takes 6 to 9 months to deploy.
What is the best LOS for commercial and SBA lending?
Abrigo ties commercial and SBA origination to spreading, risk rating, CECL and BSA/AML in one data set used by 2,400+ institutions. It has no mortgage module. Aloan is the clearest AI-native option: it automates document intake, spreading and credit memo drafting for commercial credit. It was founded in 2025. The LOS Directory says it doesn't yet write back into an existing LOS and delivers exports instead, while Aloan describes running alongside the LOS you have.
What is the best LOS for credit unions?
Origence arc OS is built for credit unions, and The LOS Directory rates its indirect auto program the strongest for a credit union with a dealer network. Its mortgage capability is thinner than a dedicated mortgage LOS. MeridianLink has the deepest credit union core integrations in the guide, including Symitar and Corelation, and MeridianLink Consumer (formerly LoansPQ) is widely deployed for consumer lending.
What is the best LOS for fintech and alternative lenders?
Lenders that want origination, servicing and collections in one configurable system often shortlist HES LoanBox and TurnKey Lender. Small-business, merchant cash advance and consumer lenders can add TaskSuite's Loan Suite to that shortlist: origination, credit, servicing and loan management on one loan record, with the AI agents built in (our own product). HES lists SME, BNPL, MCA, auto, consumer and mortgage lending, with a no-code workflow engine. The LOS Directory flags due-diligence questions for U.S. banks about a smaller, Lithuania-based vendor. TurnKey Lender targets new and fast-scaling consumer, SME, BNPL and embedded-finance lenders.
Do you need a new LOS to use AI?
Usually not. Most lenders already own an LOS that records the loan correctly. What it leaves to people is the work around the loan: collecting and checking documents, chasing what's missing, pulling bureau data, running fraud checks and drafting the credit memo. AI agents can do that work on top of the LOS you keep, through its APIs, with people signing off. TaskSuite's published figure for lenders using its Loan Credit Agents is 80% faster underwriting.
Replace the LOS when it can't support a product you need or the vendor is ending support. Otherwise a 6 to 12 month migration is a slow way to get AI. We cover the options in AI-native lending platforms vs legacy LOS and how to add AI without replacing your LOS.
Where does TaskSuite fit?
TaskSuite is the route for lenders who want AI without a forced migration. It isn't ranked in the buyer guides above, so this is our own description. TaskSuite makes AI agents and loan software for lenders, and works two ways:
- AI agents on the LOS you run. The Loan Origination Agents handle outreach by email, SMS and WhatsApp, application help and document collection. The Loan Credit Agents pull bureau data, run fraud checks and draft the credit memo. They connect to your LOS or LMS by API, with no migration.
- The Loan Suite. Origination, credit, servicing and loan management modules, with a white-labeled application and borrower portal, for lenders who want one platform.
TaskSuite supports small-business loans and merchant cash advances, personal, student and auto loans, and buy-now-pay-later, and serves 200+ lenders, from fintech and specialty lenders to credit unions and banks. Either way, agents prepare the work and your team signs off, with every step logged.
Most lenders start with one workflow, usually document collection. Request a demo to see the agents on loan work like yours.
How do you choose an LOS?
- Start from your loan mix. Full coverage of your main products is a gating requirement.
- Choose one suite or best-of-breed, such as Encompass for mortgage plus Abrigo for commercial.
- Get core and data integrations in writing for your specific core, bureaus and verification providers.
- Price three years all-in: implementation, migration, training, per-loan fees and any platform licensing.
- Ask references your size what slipped in their timeline.
- Find the real bottleneck. If it's document chasing or memo prep, an AI agent layer may fix it faster than a new LOS.
FAQ
What is the best loan origination system in 2026?
It depends on what you lend. Buyer guides most often recommend ICE Encompass for mortgage, nCino for multi-product banks, MeridianLink and Origence arc OS for credit unions, Abrigo or Baker Hill for commercial and SBA, and HES LoanBox or TurnKey Lender for all-in-one platforms. If you already have an LOS that works, adding AI agents such as TaskSuite's is usually faster than replacing it.
Can I add AI to my LOS without replacing it?
Yes. TaskSuite's AI agents connect to the LOS or LMS you run by API and take on document collection, bureau pulls, fraud checks and credit memo drafting, while the LOS stays the system of record and your team makes every credit decision. See how to add AI without replacing your LOS.
Is there an AI-native loan origination system?
Yes. Aloan is an AI-native commercial LOS, and established suites are adding AI features to existing workflows. TaskSuite offers both other routes: AI agents on the LOS you already run, or its own Loan Suite with the agents built in.
How long does LOS implementation take?
The LOS Directory cites 6 to 12 months for full nCino and Encompass deployments, 6 to 9 months for Baker Hill, and sometimes weeks for lighter cloud platforms. Adding AI agents to an existing LOS involves no migration and is scoped one workflow at a time.
What's the difference between an LOS and an LMS?
An LOS runs the loan before funding: application, underwriting, documents and closing. An LMS runs it after funding: payments, statements, delinquency and payoff. See our loan management software guide.
